How ultrasonic atomiazation works

What is ultrasonic atomization? The principle is quite simple – all we need is a surface vibrating with ultrasonic frequency and liquid that wets the surface. What happens next is the liquid forming standing wave and ejecting tiny droplets into the surrounding. This phenomena is used e.g. in air humidifiers because it effectively creates a water mist that spreads in the air. The same phenomena can be used for obtaining metal powder – liquid metal wets vibrating surface of a part called sonotrode, standing wave is formed and droplets of molten metal ejected into the surrounding. As those droplets solidify, they turn into spherical powder particles, perfect for metal 3D printing. And that’s basically how rePowder works.
