Public patent disclosure

The very idea of the patent is – show the world how it works and then it is yours for 20 years. Public disclosure is key. National patent offices usually publish the patent application 18 month after the form is filled, during this time your invention is not considered prior art. Also, during this period inventors feel quite safe talking about the invention, but as long as it wasn’t disclosed publicly, anybody can patent something very similar.
